Hello! My name is Katie Spillar, and I have been serving children with complex needs and their families for over 15 years. I have a passion for helping the most vulnerable children and their families. I love to support families that have been touched by attachment wounds, trauma, foster/adoption, that are neurodivergent, or that have a sensitive nervous system. I graduated from Southwestern University with a major in Psychology and minor in Communications, and I then went on to get a master’s degree from The University of Houston-Clear Lake in Behavioral Science- Family Therapy. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I have provided therapeutic services in many different settings including therapeutic residential treatment center, treatment center for child survivors of sexual abuse and their families, foster/adoption care agency, attachment and trauma center, and private practice. I currently serve as a Small Group Coach for a training program, Being With created and led by Robyn Gobbel, that enhances clinicians’ and parent educators’ interpersonal neurobiology awareness and skills in addition to seeing clients on the care farm. When I am not working with children and families, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two young children. We like to play on the lake, take nature hikes, listen to live music, travel, and watch movies.
My work is grounded in the belief that we are all imperfect, doing the very best that we can, and we all deserve to know and believe in our worthiness of love, understanding, care, and compassion. My work is attachment-based, trauma-informed, and is supported by the science of interpersonal neurobiology. I believe that connection with self and others, regulation, and felt-safety are imperative for secure relationships and healthy behavior. I believe behavior is information, and the best way to change it is to try to understand it and meet the need that is driving it. I believe our brains can change and heal within connected relationships. Looking into another’s eyes and seeing ourselves as lovable and full of infinite worth is so powerful and is a gift that all human beings deserve. Children and adults sometimes need loads of support before they are able to see and be seen in this way. My desire is to offer this support as your family works to learn, repair, heal, and grow. We decide together what it feels like your family needs most. My job is not to fix the problem, but I will be with you, offering tools, techniques, and loads of compassion as we move through this healing journey together.
